Instructional Methods & Strategies:

I am a strong advocate for the whole-brain learning (4MAT) and problem-based learning. My instructional methods and strategies are built around the 4MAT and problem-based learning.

Teaching Philosophy:

I view teaching as an enthusiastically dynamic process for transferring knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of implicit and explicit contents. What is that enthusiastically dynamic process?

First and foremost, I would like to stress that teaching and learning need to be fun, interactive, and engaging in meaningful ways. Teaching in the 21st century requires educators to have technical competence to properly and effectively apply a variety of research-based instructional methods and technologies to deliver subject matters in ways that maximize students' learning regardless of their preferred learning styles. What is equally important is the ability to locate, analyze, synthesize, and organize relevant teaching resources that reflect real world experiences and match respective interests of various generations of learners.

Furthermore, in addition to standardized assessment tools, instructors are required to have necessary know-how in designing, developing and customizing innovative and practical assessment tools for evaluating students’ performance based on Bloom’s taxonomy. Knowledge of various learning theories, instructional technologies, teaching methodologies, classroom management strategies, and their shortcomings and merits is vitally important for effective instruction.

In addition, the fact that teacher-learner interaction plays a crucial role in quality teaching and learning, we, as educators, cannot afford to ignore our students’ human factors. Therefore, I believe that the ability to personally connect with each student through effective communication, sincere empathy, and keen recognition of his/her socioeconomic and demographic background is a must for quality teaching and learning.

Mentorship and empowerment are powerful tools that can be employed to promote students’ learning and intellectual growth. In addition to formal curricula, I believe that students need to be given opportunities to grow intellectually through meaningful professional development activities both on- and off-campus. Not only do students learn new things from those professional development activities, they also have chances to network with other students and professionals; this is helpful for students’ career development and placement.

Last, but not least, I believe that I need to show strong interest in my students’ work and appreciate and award their achievement and creativity. I need to constantly remind my students that successful completion of their study is my major concern. Finally, my students are my friends, and they will become lifelong learners who highly value and have a great sense of respect for cultural and intellectual diversities.
